There has always been some argument and controversy over whether using fish attractants is a worthwhile practice or just a misleading fad!

Although many aspiring and experienced fisherman use and swear by the use of fish attractants and have been happily using them for years. The popularity of fish attractants being used on our baits has gone from strength to strength in all areas of fishing not just freshwater fishing lures

Products like ‘Gulp’ have been hugely successful and have shown a shift from using somewhat more crude methods of attracting our quarry to more high tech and supposedly scientifically driven methods to entice that prize fish right onto your freshwater lure.

Though really, do these new hi-tech fish attractants work?

Well that really depends on who you ask!

Though the general opinion is that there are clear advantages of using a fish attractant or masking scent on your baits and there are a number of reasons for this.

It’s unavoidable for the average fisherman to come into contact with a whole range of chemicals and substances which to us are a part of our everyday lives.

Substances like tobacco, sugary cakes, boat fuel, insect repellent, sunscreen all of which people don’t think twice how fish may react to the smallest trace quantities of these chemicals, which are transferred onto our lures. In fact the most prized fish species such as the Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are extremely sensitive to these chemicals and find these ordinary everyday substances totally repulsive.

So the use of a ‘Fish Attractant’ can serve to mask these chemical scents which would otherwise repel the fish your trying to catch.
Also scientific evidence has shown a fish attractant will help re-affirm a fish’s suspicion that your freshwater lures are in fact a real life food source and therefore entice more bites.

Although the product makers would have you believe that their products actively attract fish. Freshwater predator species rely more on sight to identify possible food sources rather than smell.

In any case, the improved technology of modern ‘Fish Attractants’ has gained ever increasing popularity among casual and professional anglers, and it seems to make sense; that using a masking scent or attractant is well worth the small investment for any fisherman serious about the sport.
